Used Oil Filters that enter Nickco Recycling, Inc.'s facility go through a three step process. They are first crushed and moved to a concrete retaining pit where much of the used oil is gathered and then piped into a holding tank. Crushed filters are then transferred to a Heat Cleaning Device where they are heated in a low oxygen atmosphere at 500 to 800 degrees fahrenheit for fourteen hours. The heating releases most of the remaining oil contained in the Used Oil Filters which is removed through a gravity recovery system built into the furnace. Any remaining oil is recovered using a belt skimmer from Abanaki Corp., and piped to the holding tank. Heating also volatilize the paint, rubber gaskets, and paper filter material contained in the Used Oil Filters. The now oil clean steel is then sent to steel mills where it is recycled. Finally, the carbon residue that remains from the heating process is recycled with lignite to fuel power generating plants.
